Situated in the northern portion of the lengthy historic road
which is now the centre of a trendy precinct dubbed 'Upper Penang
Road, the locality comprises upscale restaurants, karaoke joints,
bars, discotheques, pubs, and vogue boutique and antique shops.
The area also has its own unique home-grown charm, most notably
the historic architecture and streetscape. Most of the establishments
are housed in heritage buildings cleverly restored to provide an
appealing ambience, without being inimical, for merry-makers.
One particular building stands out. Restored to its former glory,
the Leong Yin Kean mansion now houses 32 Restaurant or “The Mansion”
as it is popularly called by the locals. Set by the sea, with ample
parking space, the restaurant incorporates a spacious lounge and
dining area.
The menu features a wide range of Continental and European cuisine
accompanied by a wide selection of wines. Appetisers range from
all-time favourite Crispy Soft Shell Crab in Beer Batter to more
interesting offerings like Spicy Glass Noodle Salad. For starters,
the traditional Caesar Salad is a must. Creamy Crab Bisque &
Italian Wild Mushroom Soup makes up a list of decadent-sounding
soups on offer.
The main menu ranges from old favourites, 6-Spice Marinated Barbeque
Chicken and Braised Whole Lamb Shank ‘Osso Buco’ style to the new
Chef’s recommendation of Pan-seared Seafood Medley of Slipper Lobster,
Tiger Prawn, Perch & Mussel with Crustacean Bisque. Also a must
try is the house specialty – Crab Laksa Lemak.
For desserts, recommended items include the Sticky Toffee Pudding
and the Mango Crepe-Pancake with chunks of fresh mango covered with
gratinated white wine saboyan.
